A Kerry start-up competes with the Tech Titans

Kerry based Mobacar are a three-year-old start-up that was spun out from financial services firm Fexco, where its founder Mike Webster worked for 7 years.

Mobacar’s intelligent mobility solutions are dedicated to providing the travelling consumer with personalised trip-appropriate transportation choices, helping to improve the quality of their lives. Within the global car rental sector, Mobacar’ s proprietary cognition engine AI technology enables clients to offer their consumers intelligently matched car rental package options driving revenue, profitability and overall consumer satisfaction.

Mobacar’ s AI software is used by major travel groups around the world, including multibillion-dollar e-commerce system Travelport, Europcar and Australia’s biggest online travel agency, Flight Centre.

The challenge

We at DNM provided initially an Enterprise Architect review of their Data Centre Platform with a view of migrating their application to AWS while at the same time creating a new platform for their AI solution.

With a small application development team at Mobacar, they needed a cloud partner that would augment their development team to take them on their journey to the cloud. They needed a partner that could analyse, design, migrate and operate their application platform on AWS.

The solution

Our role was to look at their current platform in terms of a Well-Architected Framework with regards to of Availability, Security, Performance and Scalability. Once consensus was reached on the Architecture, we provided an AWS Solution Architect to sign off on the blue print.

From there, we then looked at the deployment, automation, operation and management of this platform. DNM initially augmented the Mobacar DevOps team, looking primarily at the AWS platform, while later we took on the role of “Next Gen” Managed Services, managing the platform and integrating an agile “build to change” methodology. This enabled us to continue to look at new AWS services that would continually improve their environment while at the same time, they were growing and reaching a much wider global customer base.

How AWS services were used as part of the solution

Our partnership with Mobacar has seen their solution go from an initial re-platforming of their monolithic application and elimination of an expensive, difficult to scale database platform as part of the migration to AWS, to a move to a micro-services architecture based on Docker.

AWS services that were used for Mobacar’s AI platform are as follows EC2, RDS, DMS, Aurora, EFS, CodeDeploy, Redshift EMR, QuickSight, S3, ECS, CloudFront, WAF,  DataPipeline, Lambda and Cloudwatch.

To support the platform DNM also used a number of  3rd party services including  docker, Rancher, MongoDB,Tomcat, Kafka, Zookeeper, MS SQLServer, Tableau, Outscan, Datadog

Business Impact

Using the AWS platform, Mobacar were able to transform their business model.

They were able to develop an AI platform cost effectively and simplify the predictability of how customers could better use their services without making a huge Capex investment.

For that reason, Mobacar sees itself as an AI company that’s competing with tech titans like IBM Watson and Adobe. Their CEO Mark Webster says the proof of Mobacar’s strength is its deal with Travelport.
